A courtyard in Macbeth’s castle – Morning

There is a knocking at the gates and the porter goes to open the door. The porter is imagining himself being the porter of hell-gate. Macduff and Lenox joke around with him about alcohol. Macbeth comes in and shows Macduff to where Duncan was once sleeping and while Macduff is discovering Duncan’s death Lenox is describing the unnatural events in the night. He says “The night has been unruly: where we lay, Our chimneys were blown down; and, as they say, Lamentings heard i’ the air; strange screams of death.” Macduff then returns from the room and is in horror at the discovery of Duncan’s death.
